Dyad brings AI app building onto your own computer
A local AI app builder that lets people use their own models and keep the generated code on disk.

Most prompt-to-app tools begin in someone else's browser and end on someone else's infrastructure. Will Chen built Dyad around a different starting point: a desktop app where the project files stay with the maker. The first public repository dates to April 2025; by October 2026, it had become one of the more visible open-code alternatives to hosted AI builders.
An app builder that leaves the code in your hands
Dyad turns a text request into a web app, but it also lets a user import an existing project, inspect files, change the result in an editor and publish through services they choose. It supports cloud model providers as well as local models through tools such as Ollama and LM Studio. That flexibility is the point: using the free desktop app does not require moving the source into a proprietary workspace.
The licensing boundary matters. The repository says code outside src/pro is Apache-2.0; the Pro directory uses a separate fair-source license. The core builder is open source, while paid modes and bundled AI credits are commercial offerings. Calling every part of Dyad Apache-licensed would be inaccurate.
From an early alternative to a large developer following
On October 6, the public GitHub repository showed 21,663 stars and 2,671 forks. Dyad's own homepage also displayed a claim of more than one million downloads; that download total is the company's figure, not independently audited usage. The open repository and continuing releases are directly visible, but neither stars nor downloads tell us how many people finish or maintain an app with it.
Chen has described the original motivation as giving builders ownership rather than renting a closed workflow. The project's scale makes that argument more than a prototype pitch, while the split license shows how the team is trying to support development commercially.
