The creator of VibeSDR wanted to check radio signals while working on antennas without balancing a phone and Bluetooth trackball. That very physical problem led to a touch-first software-defined radio interface. It has since grown beyond an app into clients, a server that can run on an old Android phone, and a public directory of receivers people can tune in a browser.

A receiver that can also become a station for others

VibeSDR connects to existing SDR networks or a radio dongle. Its VibeServer can publish a receiver through a managed tunnel, so listeners can open a link without the owner configuring port forwarding. The same signal-processing work underpins the phone, browser, desktop and Apple Watch experiences; the Watch client can tune and play on its own.

The project page includes concrete hardware measurements rather than only feature promises. In a September test on a 2019 Samsung XCover 4s, the maker reported about 35 KB/s to a browser listener for an FM-stereo stream with waterfall data. That is a reported result from one setup, not a guarantee for every receiver or network.

A non-developer directing the code

The creator explicitly says Claude writes the code while they provide the concept, interface decisions, hardware testing and release sign-off. They also describe an outside user submitting a bug fix. That division is unusually clear: AI accelerated implementation, but the meaningful validation happened on real radio hardware and with people who could check signal quality.

The GPL-3.0 repository had 81 stars and eight forks on October 6. Android builds are available from GitHub, while the iOS app is paid on the App Store and the source remains free. The project shows a working public receiver network, but no verified user total or revenue figure has been published in the sources reviewed.
