Why I built it

Learning a new word is easy. Remembering it after a few days or weeks is the difficult part.

I wanted to build something that would help people not only collect new words but also remember them over time. That’s how Firecracker Vocabulary Flashcards started.

What does it do?

Firecracker Vocabulary Flashcards lets you create your own vocabulary collection and practise the words you want to remember.

You can add words, phrases, and idioms, along with their meanings, examples, personal notes, and useful links.

The app also includes:

• Spaced-repetition flashcards: Based on the Leitner system, where words move through different boxes depending on how well you remember them.
• Collaborative learning: Invite friends to build and learn from a shared vocabulary collection.
• Word guessing game: Practise recalling words from their meanings.
• Search and filtering: Find and organise your vocabulary as your collection grows.
• Dictionary links: Quickly look up words in popular online dictionaries (Oxford, Merriam-Webster, Cambridge)

A little about the development

I’m an independent developer, and this is one of my personal projects.

The frontend is built with Ionic and Vue, while the backend uses NestJS and PostgreSQL. The application is available on Android and the web.

Both the frontend and backend repositories are publicly available on GitHub.

I continue to improve the app, especially its usability, design, and learning experience.
