GitDelivr was a weekend response to an unglamorous open-source problem: the bandwidth bill for people cloning public repositories. Its maker presented the free Git clone cache on Show HN on March 2, 2026.

The GNOME mirror story was the prompt

The maker said reports that GNOME had redirected clone traffic toward GitHub mirrors made them wonder why Git traffic could not be cached like package downloads. They built the service with Cloudflare Workers and R2. A public repository URL is prefixed with gitdelivr.net; repeated matching requests can be answered from the edge. The maker described hashing a Git request to key the cached packfile and giving refs a short 60-second lifetime.

What the weekend build achieved

The maker reported testing about a dozen remotes, including GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg and self-hosted services, with running costs around $5 a month. In one warmed Linux clone from their own connection, GitDelivr took roughly five seconds versus 18 seconds directly from GitHub. That is a single maker-run comparison, not a general speed guarantee; no adoption figure was shared.

A security claim was corrected

A commenter pointed out that Git object hashes verify object integrity but do not prove that a mirror served the authentic branch refs or HEAD. The maker accepted that correction. Anyone using a third-party Git mirror should treat this as a real trust boundary, particularly for builds or other sensitive workflows.
